Phlogiston, Oil & acrylic on dimensional canvas, 2011
I begin by painting on flat canvas to create a space for exploration. This canvas is laminated with a second layer and becomes rigid over a period of about an hour, during which time it is shaped and reshaped. This phase is quite organic and the final result always differs radically from the initial idea.Another round of painting takes place after the shape has been permanently fixed, informed and constrained by the structure and dimensionality of the work.
